Man City vs Tottenham EFL Cup

After both these sides crashed out of the ‘European Super League’ fiasco in midweek, they can now put controversy aside and focus on tangible silverware, and significantly for Manchester City, a chance to win a joint-record eighth EFL Cup and a step towards the treble. However, two surprise defeats from their last three domestic matches, and a pair of 2-0 losses across the last three H2Hs vs Tottenham (W1), means this trophy could go either way.

Making a joint-record 18th appearance at the new Wembley, City have enjoyed this competition in recent years after winning three consecutive EFL Cup finals, and only conceding once across those games. However, Pep Guardiola will be concerned that his side have conceded the opener in four straight competitive matches (W2, L2), particularly as the team scoring first has won eight of their nine domestic cup fixtures this term.

Tottenham Hotspur have had a more eventful week than most, sacking José Mourinho despite the fact no manager has won this competition more times than the Portuguese maverick (four). Now ‘Spurs’ must do without the man that guided them to just one win from his last six games in charge (W1, D2, L3), a run that saw the Londoners net before HT in five outings.

A good start could help settle the nerves of the four-time EFL Cup champions as they’ve lost four EFL Cup finals too – only fierce-rivals Arsenal have lost more. That said, on Wednesday Tottenham won 2-1 in their first game without Mourinho despite trailing at HT – the first time since December 2019 that Spurs won a Premier League game after losing at the break.

Players to score: City’s Rodri scored the opener in the last H2H and grabbed a first-half header in midweek – he did the same thing in the 2019/20 EFL Cup final! After Gareth Bale scored on Wednesday, Tottenham are now unbeaten in the last 25 games that the Welsh wizard has found the net for the club (W22, D3).

Hot streak: Guardiola has guided City to victory in all six finals under his tenure.

Prediction: Man City [2] vs [0] Tottenham
