Burnley vs West Ham United Premier League
Sean Dyche’s Burnley ended their three-game losing streak with a 4-0 HT/FT win last time out, thus alleviating doubt over their Premier League (PL) survival for another season. That game extended their run of matches seeing over 2.5 goals to five, two of which saw Burnley score first but ultimately lose.
Currently on their longest winless top-flight home run since 1971 (D5, L2), Burnley look to stop the rot here, though to their credit the ‘Clarets’ came from behind in three of five stalemates in that sequence. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Turf Moor is also the least entertaining ground based on average total goals per game ahead of the round (1.94).
Visiting West Ham United’s top-four dreams were dealt a hammer blow last time out and as such, victory here is imperative with their Champions League qualification dream starting to fade (W2, D1, L2). To win, West Ham may well need to score twice as both teams have scored in a joint league-high 19 of their games, although only Man City have scored in more PL fixtures this season than the ‘Hammers’ (27) ahead of the round.
With one win from five PL away games (W1, D1, L3), West Ham must rediscover the form that saw them win four straight trips prior. However, it could prove unlikely as manager David Moyes has lost all three of his away H2Hs with Burnley, twice ‘to nil’ and as many with a 2+ goal margin.
Players to score: Burnley’s Chris Wood became the first New Zealander to grab a PL hat-trick last time out, and he has six goals in seven H2Hs against West Ham. Since his debut for West Ham, no player’s goals were more crucial in earning his side more points than Jesse Lingard’s nine strikes (ten points).
Hot stat: Burnley boss Sean Dyche is unbeaten in six of seven personal H2Hs with David Moyes’ managed sides (W4, D2, L1) – both teams scored in only one game.
Prediction: Burnley vs West Ham
